Tok,
called the gateway to Alaska, was originally a camp for the
construction of the Alcan and Glenn Highways in the 1940's. Then it
was designated as a presidential town site and opened to
civilians in 1946. Also that year, a post office and roadhouse were
built. A year later, the first school was opened. Today there
are many things to do in Tok, from sled dog demonstrations, gold panning,
visiting an Alaskan theme park, playing miniature golf, attending a
salmon bake, to enjoying a sourdough pancake breakfast, enjoying Native
dancing, and even Bingo! There are 15 miles of paved bike trails in Tok,
the Race of Champions Sled Dog Race is held every March and don't forget
the 4th of July celebration complete with parade floats, games, good food
and good times. Enjoy Tok's summer temperatures of 60-70ºF,
and brave the winter temperatures -30/-70ºF to watch the magnificent
Northern Lights dance in the sky above the town.
