Girdwood/Alyeska

Girdwood was founded
as a gold mining town at the turn of the century, and named for James
Girdwood, an Irish immigrant and linen merchant with four gold claims on
Crow Creek. Originally founded as a mining town, Girdwood's
development was spurred by railroad construction 1915. Soon Girdwood began
to boom with new businesses. A World War II presidential order
forced mines closed and made Girdwood a near ghost town. In 1949,
construction began on the Seward Highway connecting Seward to Anchorage In
1954 and the town again began to flourish. A handful of local men formed
the Alyeska Ski Corporation, and dreamed of a first-class ski resort, and
in 1960, the first chair lift and a day lodge was built. Then on
Good Friday in 1964, a 9.2 magnitude earthquake dropped the coastal edges
along the Turnagain Arm 8 to 10 feet. The town site was moved two and 1/2
miles up the valley to the present location. In 1967, the resort was sold,
and then sold again in October 1980. Girdwood, today, has offers year
round visitors to Alaska, a post office, mercantile, restaurants and
bars, a variety of B&B's, and plenty of boutiques and shops.
