Hatcher Pass

Lodging
Hatcher Pass, in the Talkeetna Mountains,  is located less than a two hour drive North from Anchorage, sits 3,886 feet above sea level and is the   site of the Independence Mine State Historical Park. This area with it's pristine alpine scenery,  glorious wildflowers covering the valley floor in spring and summer, and historic mine buildings, is magnificent in all seasons.  The mines at Hatcher Pass employed up to 204 people, and in 1941 alone they took $1 million in gold ($17 million in today's currency) from the earth. Today, an historical view of gold mining in the Talkeetnas can be had touring the Independence Mine Historical Park, spend a day hiking, and enjoying the spectacular scenery, and in winter, the area is a paradise for snowboarders, skiers, dog mushers and snow shoe enthusiasts. You can get to Hatcher Pass most easily either through Wasilla or Palmer.
