Hatcher Pass, in the Talkeetna Mountains,  is located less than a two hour drive North from Anchorage, sits 3,886 feet above sea level and is the   site of the Independence Mine State Historical Park. This area with it's pristine alpine scenery,  glorious wildflowers covering the valley floor in spring and summer, and historic mine buildings, is magnificent in all seasons.  The mines at Hatcher Pass employed up to 204 people, and in 1941 alone they took $1 million in gold ($17 million in today's currency) from the earth. Today, an historical view of gold mining in the Talkeetnas can be had touring the Independence Mine Historical Park, spend a day hiking, and enjoying the spectacular scenery, and in winter, the area is a paradise for snowboarders, skiers, dog mushers and snow shoe enthusiasts. You can get to Hatcher Pass most easily either through Wasilla or Palmer.

 

Lodging Relax in this Rustic Retreat 

Located one hour North of Anchorage, this warm and inviting lodge, is situated on the banks of the Little Susitna River.  Here, guests will find an oasis in the wilderness of Hatcher Pass, with a choice from  8 ample, sunny rooms, each with queen bed and private bath, a magnificent view of the Talkeetna Mountains,  and a hearty continental breakfast each morning of their stay. There is also a three room suite with shared bath (Bridal Suite) available. To enhance the guests experience of relaxation in the wilderness, there are no telephones or televisions in the rooms.  After a full day exploring the breathtaking surroundings, and enjoying a variety of Alaskan activities, from hiking, berry picking, mountain biking, gold panning in the summer, to snow shoeing, dog mushing, and skiing in the winter, relax with your favorite beverage on the large deck and soak in the warm sun, or enjoy a wonderful meal of great regional food. For the ultimate end to a busy day, unwind in the toasty wood-burning sauna. Rates start at /night, based on double occupancy. add $15.00 per day per extra guest over 5 years old. Rates include hearty continental breakfast, meal plans available. Off season rates available. Pets on approval, with $50 pet deposit and $15 pet fee. Ask for MLL

Situated in historic gold country, high in the Talkeetna Mountains, this rustic, yet comfortable lodge offers guests a true taste of Alaska.  The lodge boasts a total of 9 cabins and three rooms, some of which can accommodate up to 6 people. In summer, take in the unparalleled beauty of the high tundra meadows and alpine lakes, where wildflowers, berries and wildlife abounds.  If snow is your thing, you'll be in heaven, as this area has the white stuff an average of seven months a year.  Skiers, and snowboarders, of all skill levels with find the slopes here incredible, or if you'd like something tamer, relax in the lodge and take in the winter wonderland through the large picture windows.  Or unwind in the steaming sauna just down the path from the lodge.  The lodge serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and has a full bar.  Try the gourmet pizza and maybe a hot-buttered rum!  Rates start at per night, single occupancy, $15 per additional person for double occupancy.  Cabins per night, pets, $15 additional.
