McCarthy,
located on the Kennicott River, about 1.5 miles after the end
of the McCarthy Rd, lies within the Wrangell-St Elias National Park and
Preserve. The town of McCarthy was developed after copper was discovered
in nearby Kennicott, and lies in a scenic area of mountains and glaciers.
It sits at the end of the late-great CR&NW Railroad, know fondly by
locals as the "can't run and never will". This tiny town has no
school, television or post office, but it does have a mining museum with
photos and artifacts. Kennicott is an old copper mining town located next
to the Kennicott Glacier on a mountainside. Closed in 1938, the Kennecott
Copper Mine (note the different spelling) was once the richest in the
world and is a National Historic Site. Now an old ghost town, it
lies 4.5 miles past the town of McCarthy at the end of the old CR&NW
railroad tracks.

YOU! In the Heart of the Wrangell Mts.

Built in 1987, this Lodge is a replica of one of the historic mining
buildings from the copper mining boom town days. It is located near the
center of the 40 remaining structures in the ghost town of Kennicott, a company
town built circa 1910.
The lodge has 25 Guest rooms, a dining room, 2 living rooms, and a 190 foot long
front porch with a panoramic view of the Chugach and Wrangell Mountains. All is
in one building, so the aroma of fresh brewed coffee or baking bread may wake

Your clean, quiet bedroom is decorated with old mining artifacts and photos,
and makes a great home base for exploring the area. Each bedroom has a cold
water sink. There are plenty of spotlessly clean bathrooms and shower rooms
located throughout the lodge for your use. You’ll enjoy the casual
atmosphere and congenial staff when you dine in our centrally located dining
room. Fantastic All-Inclusive Packages include breakfast and lunch served from a menu, and dinner
