"Ninilchik"
means "peaceful settlement by a river", and that's exactly
what this community, steeped in Old Russian fur trading history is. This
small village, where many residents still speak the language of Mother
Russia, and the century old Russian Orthodox Church
and historic cemetery share the skyline with two active volcanoes, is a
haven for visitors. Fishing is excellent here, whether you are
angling for trout, salmon or halibut. Or maybe try your hand at
clamming at low tide. You'll find beautiful campgrounds, unique shops,
comfortable lodging, and sightseeing to your hearts content. You
may witness whales, seals, and sea otters in the waters, bald eagles
nesting in the trees, or soaring overhead. Or maybe a moose just
wandering through town! In August, check out the livestock, crafts
and produce at the Kenai Peninsula State Fair. Enjoy the endless days of
summer, or visit in the fall, hunting is good here! If winter is
your preference, try dog mushing, cross country skiing, snowmachining,
or maybe even ice fishing. Whenever you visit, you can be sure that the
friendly locals will make you feel right at home!
