Talkeetna located at the junction of the Talkeetna and Susitna Rivers,  lies on a spur  road 14 miles off of the George Parks Highway, 115 miles north of Anchorage.  The town was originally the site of a Tanaina Indian village, and  was established as a mining town and trading post before either Wasilla or Anchorage existed.  Talkeetna is a non-Native community that serves as a take-off point for fishing and flightseeing trips, and a staging area for Mount McKinley climbing expeditions, providing  air taxi, helicopter, outfitters, and related services. Talkeetna is accessible by road, rail and air. January temperatures average 4 to 23; July can vary from 47 to 68.

Dogsled Tours

This charming Bed and Breakfast, open year round and located in the home of the hosts, who are Iditarod competitors and finishers, offers you the opportunity to take part in the Alaska outdoors, including trying your hand at dog mushing, or just relaxing in the comfort of your room.  A family style breakfast is provided, as are complimentary tours of the dog lot.  As an added bonus to the beautiful and peaceful surroundings, you have a variety of dog mushing experiences to choose from, at additional fee.  Dog tours run from December 1 to March 15.   Tours range from a 2 1/2 hour ride on the runners to a two day dog mushing seminar, to several overnight tours and seminars.  Guests supply necessary winter gear, hosts provide parkas, bibs, boots, etc., as needed.  All dog team travel requires reasonable physical fitness and includes an experienced guide and snow machine support. Dog Mushing Experience - /pp, Dog mushing seminar - per person.  Call for details and other rates. See Another Side of Alaska from the River

Want to make your trip to Alaska complete?  Then try this!  Float the Talkeetna, Susitna or Chulitna river, and witness incredible scenery, Alaskan wildlife and glorious mountain vistas.  All float trips include transportation, lunches, snacks and raingear.  Guests should bring a jacket or sweater, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camera and lots of film.  Three float trips are offered:  The Susitna float, with it's glacial valley vistas:  3 hours in length, per person, The Chulitna float, going from canyon-like setting to broad glacial valley: 5 hours in length, per person, and The Soft Adventure, a full day excursion, going from canyon to glacial valley:  8 hours in length,  per person. Ask for DVR
